UPDATE FROM JESS: The New York Times published my letter! I guess someone in their editorial office was pissed as well.
The following convo took place over Ping. (<3 shout out to Merideth for making sure we saw this NY Times article!)
Becky: Woah, have u seen this?
Jess: OMG. Smthng in this article makes me so angry, but I cant figure out what! Im sure that being on a college campus where women > men makes dating even more confusing. But smthng about his tone, and the way he talks about these young women, feels very condescending and old-school to me.
Becky: I think the whole meta convo about women has to change.
Jess: Yes! Agreed. We have to stop being talked about as desperate and clamoring for relationships/marriage!
Becky: Right. We’re obv not all desperate, needy girls if we’re 60/40 on college campuses! But it’s all part of the prevailing HJNTIY dating narrative (*He’s Just Not That Into You, for anyone who doesn’t have that book on their shelf…) – that women are desperate and trying every trick in the book – while dudes are the lions of the pride…UGH!
Jess: Insane that these articles r still being printed. I’m going to write a letter to the NYT!
Becky: lol do it!

silly article, definitely. having a few extra girls on campus is not going to change things for most people. it just sounds like a convenient excuse or explanation for why the people they quote are dealing with… the same stuff everyone deals with.
