We desire, the way a twice-poisoned dog eyes a third piece of meat.
-Philip Milito
I’ve always loved this simple, little poem. It’s a perfectly distilled thought, and so true. This website is proof – we’ve all been there! Chasing (or just Facebook stalking) the guys we know we shouldn’t want. Giving that Guy Who Just Blew You Off a second chance…and a third…and fourth…and a seventh… Rationalizing, justifying, excusing and forgiving a guy’s unworthy behavior in the name love.
But what is it we think we want? What do we desire so badly? What is worth the indignity and the pain?
I just got a new puppy (<3 Bear Tennessee!) and he is an important reminder to me of what unconditional love is. Fate throws you together – and you take care of each other. You don’t harbor idealized illusions. There’s no bullshit psycho-analyzing or “settling.” You let go of crazy paranoia and you trust. You’re lucky every day to have each other – even as you drive each other slightly crazy.
This hope – this beautiful hope for love – is what keeps us coming back for more in the fucked up romantic universe of today. This hope is what keeps us going after (even just in our heads) those no-no guys. We can’t help feeling that – maybe – it could work out. We’re romantic optimists, even at our peril.
But whatever else we may be, we’re not crazy. When you do find that guy, there’s nothing like the excitement and the thrill and the comfort and the joy of falling in love and committing to love. So even as (more often than not) it doesn’t work out in the end, we’ll keep eyeing those twice poisoned love affairs, and the new prospects that come our way. And when we find Him – well – they call it puppy love for a reason.
