How far would you go? For Federer? For really good sushi? For love?
Happening this weekend at a movie theater near you – Drew Barrymore and Justin Long (a real life it-seems-to-be-complicated couple) take on the anxieties of miles-apart love in GOING THE DISTANCE. With Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, and Christina Applegate along for sh*ts and giggles. Relationships are hard and complicated – why not get down and dirty and have some laughs at your own expense?
Even A.O. Scott in his NY Times review commends GTD’s take on modern love. “Romantic comedies nowadays tend to be either aggressively coarse or artificially sweet, and “Going the Distance” finds a workable middle ground, freeing its main man from obnoxious puerility and declining to turn his beloved into a latter-day career gal tripping headlong toward the altar.” Count us psyched to see it!
Here at WTF?!, the Long Distance Relationship was one of the first romantic issues we grappled with. BYE BYE GERTIE by WTF?! reader CookieLoverLover10 remains one of the most poignant Guest Blogs we have published so far.
But there’s another reason we’re psyched about GTD. The film was the brainchild of New Line Cinema exec Dave Neustadter and first-time screenwriter Geoff LaTulippe. The studio believed the script these guys developed had a fresh perspective on love and relationships and took the movie all the way.
Well, New Line Cinema optioned the WTF?! idea – The Gaggle – and here’s hoping for a repeat performance! Who knows if Dave and Geoff came up with GTD late one Brooklyn night surrounded by empty wine-and-vodka-bottles and drowning in “there-are-no-guys-in-my-life-angst” like we did (you can read the WTF?! foundation story HERE) – but we say Bravo! to these dudes who had something to say and turned it into a huge deal. Way to go the f*cking distance.
(Full disclosure: Becky used to work for New Line Cinema, which makes her even more proud and excited to see GTD!)
